Went through that with our Boxer. Vet came to the house and I held his paw as he was injected. Dead in seconds. It was best for him though as he could hardly walk..
Army son dug a grave in the garden and he was buried within the hour.
Odd that humans still can't be treated with such dignity.

Sorry to hear your sad news!!
It really is a gut wrench when you have to do this but is the right thing to do.
With time you will feel better emotionally. Maybe after some time a new pup or rehoming a dog will help.

Same as alfs, my boxer got to 14, still thought he was 14 months. If anyone had said before about the heartbreak I honestly would have replied that he’s only a dog, I was in bits, the vet was in bits because he had a boxer that he’d had recently put to sleep and ours was the first he’d done after. You’ll be treading gently over where yours used to sleep for a while but you’ll gradually feel less raw. Currently my youngest has a boxer, beautiful big red boy, nearly 2 and thinking of breeding him, wants to give me the puppy and I still don’t think I can do that again. Still, times a healer, was only 20 years ago.

Horrible thing to have to do but for the best. See far too many people avoiding the inevitable, there’s an elderly lady my way that takes her dog out in a pram, the dogs clearly beyond being making any recovery. Makes it easier when you can hand on heart say the dog had the best possible life you could offer. A shit experience but ……… Don’t get sucked into paying extra for a single personal ashes I know for a fact that in the vast majority it don’t happen. Shocking the depths some cunts will stoop to make a few quid.

That's interesting because I think people that fight kids for a cunt's shirt should have the piss beaten out of them.

Nutsin,
Firstly RIP Frank.
Secondly, You were there for him, right until the end, it would have kept him calm and settled and he literally died in his sleep, a millionaires death that it is the owners priviledge to arrange and be part of.
Thirdly, Yeah Hollywood has a lot to answer for, death is often quick and totally lacking in drama, the eyes glaze over, they go limp and that is it. This haunted me for years after being with my first dog in my late twenties and it took me a long while to make point 2 my main focus, not what I witnessed.
I wish you well mate

Nutsin, what you did was carry out a merciful termination of a suffering creature’s life. For that I commend you because keeping the suffering animal alive would be an act of cruelty.

We got another dog(same breed) a few weeks after. Initially I was trying to make comparisons which I suppose is fairly natural. After a while you get to appreciate dogs are all different.in my case made the loss far easier than I would ever have thought. We lost our dog a day after one of my sons 18th birthday as it turned out he had a proper shit 18th. He’s now coming up to 20 he’s coming home from university for his birthday we’re having a massive surprise do that as far know I’m aware knows nothing about, sounds ridiculous but last year would have been too soon.

We have had the unfortunate experience of having 3 dogs put down over the last 2 years.
The first was actually our daughter's spaniel that developed a cancerous growth on his side. He had an op but it grew back within months.
The 2nd was the best dog in the world. A Labrit Pyrenean Shepherd. Ours since a tiny 6 week old pup. Obedient, faithful and always up for chasing a stick or ball. Only 13 when cancer got him.
Then several months later our English Setter also developed a stomach cancer problem. I'd love to know what they put in dog foods but losing 3 to cancer in a short period was particularly hard on my wife.
We're now back to 2 very different dogs. An 8 month old Podenco and a rescue 18month old Black Lurcher - Labrador Greyhound cross.

Christ that’s a bad run of shit luck mate. “I’d love to know what they put in dog foods” I wouldn’t and now feed our dogs on a raw diet the brand we feed them on is natures menu. I have two fairly large German Shorthaired Pointers they come from a working strain both young and very energetic. Fortunately we can afford to feed them on the above they thrive on the stuff and rarely get sick. They get fed twice a day an hour before or after runs (as deep chested dogs are prone to bloat/twisted stomach in most cases fatal) The cost is about a fiver a day each. It’s expensive but vets bills are horrendous.I can’t reccommend it highly enough.”

Piggybacking on what some others have said, I did not put my last dog down when I probably should have. She was definitely getting towards the end (falling down stairs on occasion, losing her bladder). I let her out one morning and she refused to come back in which was very odd for her, so I let her stay out there and went to work. Came home and found she had wedged herself up under a bush far back in the yard to die. I've always felt horrible she went alone, and the loss hits just as hard.
Sorry for your loss and good on you for giving him a great life.

Hope your not dissing all of us Apsies. Branded is just a bit of a twat.
I left my last cat far too long before getting her put to sleep. She had cancer everywhere and had got to stage where she could barely move and was in a huge amount of pain. I was there when she died and she is now buried in my garden with a rose planted on top.

This is a long one. Sorry. We adopted a Rescue Dog. Staffy Cross. We were told it had lost all his top teeth trying to escape from a cage it was found in. Apparently he was adopted but the people that adopted him dumped him back at the rescue place. They could have been bullshitting but we thought f&ck it. For years, never had any trouble with him or with our kids. When he passed away we got his ashes and I’ve still not opened the bag with the Urn in it. I work from home so we now do dog minding instead as a bit of extra income.
